1 May 2024 - GSA-WA
Details: Presentation with Hugo Olirook - If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then pink diamonds are a best friend forever! With the closure of the Argyle diamond mine, which produced >90% of pink diamonds from the 1980s to 2020, the hunt is on to find more of these elusive gems. Yet it wasn’t fully clear what ingredients are required to find a new treasure trove of diamonds. By looking at Argyle in space and time, we deduced that you need three ingredients to make and bring up pink diamonds: (i) deep carbon, (ii) continental collision and (iii) continental breakup. Our work provides insights into where the next trove of pinks may be found, with work already ongoing with exploration companies to turn this dream into reality.
